Competitions are a great way to get young people excited about technical topics and careers. There, participants can develop their skills and put their talents to the test in an international environment. 4.2 Learning through Professional Competitions Qualifying young people helps to reduce the shortage of skilled workers and is a tool for responding to demographic and technological change. Skilled workers are also needed for a sustainable future. They can combat climate change by promoting electric mobility and renewable energies, and conserving resources. That is why Festo supports competitions and educational events around the world. European championship of professions The EuroSkills career competition takes place every two years and is organized by WorldSkills Europe with more than 30 member countries and partners. This year, Gdańsk, Poland, was chosen as the venue for EuroSkills Gdańsk 2023. It is the largest event for vocational training and excellence for young people in Europe. At this year’s EuroSkills, 600 professionals under the age of 25 from 32 countries took part in competitions and demonstrations in 42 professions. Tens of thousands of visitors traveled to the event. In addition, stakeholders from education, industry, government, and NGOs met on-site to exchange ideas and further develop education. Challenge in the field of mechatronics Mechatronics is one of the many disciplines at EuroSkills. Here, the task was to set up a fault-free, automated production system. An individual order is placed on the HMI touch display, where the color, number of items, and quantity of contents in the containers are specified. Technical data such as energy consumption are shown on the HMI display. After pressing the start button, the first parts are removed from the stacking magazine, subjected to quality control (color and height), filled with contents, covered with a lid, and packed in a box. Finally, they travel to their removal position on the conveyor belt. This is a challenging task that requires many skills. Gold for Festo trainees Timo Oßwald and Daniel Schmid are mechatronics trainees at Festo. They took second place at the German Championships of Mechatronics Engineers in 2021. This is how they paved their way to EuroSkills Gdańsk 2023. Together, the German team from Festo did it: they were the winners in the field of mechatronics. Festo as a sponsor Festo has been an official partner of WorldSkills Europe since 2008 and sponsors the discipline of mechatronics, among others. In 2022, Festo was named a premium sponsor by WorldSkills Europe. WorldSkills is a movement to promote vocational training.
