When renowned nature photographer
George Steinmetz set off on a GEO assign-
ment to the Antarctic, he captured stun-
ning images like the ones shown here,
depicting the deep-blue ice that has
covered the lakes of the Olympus Range
for thousands of years. This part of the
Transantarctic Mountains is in the world’s
coldest and most remote desert, covering
an area larger than Europe. The ‘Dry

Tracks of time
have remained snow-free for millions of
years. Scientists consider this biotope to
be one of the most extreme ecosystems
in the world. Only selected teams of re-
searchers have access to this fascinating
terrain. Nowhere have the tracks of time
been so well preserved as they are here.
A few years ago, geologists discovered the
fossilised remains of moose, which could
only have existed in a tundra landscape.
That would have been 13 million years ago!
